FED:Australia will help us see back in time

Australian scientists will play a key role in unlocking the secrets of the early universe
through advanced technologies being developed in Canberra.

The Australian National University's Mount Stromlo Observatory is the home of the Advanced
Instrument and Technology Centre and Science Minister KIM CARR has launched the next stage
of the project today.

The facility will help to develop a range of space science technologies including playing
a major role in the development of the Giant Magellan Telescope .. which will be the largest
optical telescope ever constructed.

When complete around 2018 .. the 700 million dollar telescope will sit high atop the
Chilean Andes providing images up to 10 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope
.. allowing astronomers to gaze at objects over 12-and-a-half billion light years from
earth.
