NSW: John Niland retires but goes out fighting

SYDNEY, Feb 23 AAP - Outspoken University of New South Wales vice-chancellor Professor
John Niland today announced he would retire next year.

But the advocate for higher university funding will go out fighting, he said today.

A fierce critic of the Howard government, Professor Niland surprised many observers
by being awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia by the Prime Minister this year.

Even upon receiving the nation's top honour, Professor Niland was vocal in his opposition
to the federal government's cuts to education …
