Page 1: Prime Minister John Howard dumps mateship from the proposed new preamble to the
constitution and accepts a new reference to indigenous kinship; Former Macquarie bank
director, Simon Gautier Hannes, faces up to 15 years jail after being convicted of insider
trading; Jennifer Paterson, half of TV's famous Two Fat Ladies, has died.
Page 2: The man who allegedly pulled the trigger in the killing of MP John Newman has been
arrested after the NSW Attorney-General offered indemnity to one of the other men charged with
the murder.
Page 3: Taxpayers picked up a bill of almost $1 million for extra travelling allowance and
overtime for politicians' staff during the last federal election, as the major parties used
the public purse for partisan purposes.
World: The UN has rejected a demand by Indonesia that the UN provide a breakdown of how
various districts voted after the referendum on August 30.
Business: CBA posts a record $1.42b net profit for the 1998-99 financial year, but has
warned that higher interest rates and a squeeze on margins could hurt earnings in the year
ahead; The two biggest Australian-owned stockbrokers, JB Were and Macquarie Equities, are set
to merge their back offices into a new sharemarket clearing company controlling up to 20 per
cent of the local market.
Sport: Tony Lockett says he'll quit at the end of the season; North Sydney Rugby League
Club's patron Joe Hockey has accused the former president of the Bears, David Hill, of
destabilising the club as it teeters near insolvency and the looming certainty of being booted
from the NRL's competition next year.
