NSW: Pedestrian killed while walking home from night out

SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - A 38-year-old man died instantly when he was hit by a car whilewalking home from a night out near Newcastle, police said today.

Witnesses told police the man was walking along the median strip on the Pacific Highwayin Belmont shortly before 2am (AEST) when he stepped back into the path of a Toyota Hiluxutility as it came over the crest of a hill.

A friend of the man and the 46-year-old male driver of the utility tried to help, butthe man had suffered fatal head injuries.

His body was taken to Newcastle morgue, where a post-mortem examination and formalidentification would be carried out tomorrow.

The driver was breath-tested at the scene, and returned a negative result, police said.

Two northbound lanes were blocked to traffic for about three hours while inquirieswere carried out, but there was minimal traffic disruption.

A report was being prepared for the Coroner.
